Activity Description
This presentation provides definitions, behavior and physical characteristics, genetics, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria for 12 syndromes: Autism, Rett’s, Asperger’s, Landau-Kleffner, Fragile X, Williams, Angelman, Prader Willi, Tourette’s, Downs, Fetal Alcohol, and Selective Mutism. New research and medical information and ethical issues are discussed.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognize the physical, communication, and social anomalies associated with various developmental syndrome disorders
- Identify a variety of syndromes and the characteristics pertinent to speech-language-hearing assessment and intervention
- Explain the ethical concerns faced by parents and professionals with the advent of medical technological advances

Author Bio
Gail J. Richard, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a professor and chair in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Gail's teaching at the university and in workshops around the country focuses on childhood developmental language disorders, learning disabilities, medical syndromes, and selective mutism. Prior to 25 years in the university setting, Gail worked in the public schools, serving preschool through high school-aged students. She especially enjoys the diagnostic challenge of differentiating among the various aspects of developmental disorders.
